Celebrity River Cruises has reached a major construction milestone with the steel cutting ceremony for Celebrity Compass, the brand’s very first river ship, held on January 29, 2026. But the biggest news of the day wasn’t the ceremony itself — it was Celebrity’s stunning announcement that it is doubling its river fleet from 10 to 20 ships.
Celebrity Compass Construction Begins
The steel cutting ceremony marks the official start of physical construction for Celebrity Compass, one of two ships scheduled to debut in 2027. Her sister ship, Celebrity Seeker, will follow closely behind. Both 172-passenger vessels will sail seven-night itineraries on the Rhine and Danube rivers, visiting iconic European cities including Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, Passau, and Amsterdam.
The ceremony is a traditional maritime milestone, symbolizing the moment when the first steel plates are cut that will eventually form the hull of the completed vessel. For Celebrity, it represents the tangible beginning of what has been the cruise industry’s most anticipated river cruise launch.
Fleet Doubled to 20 Ships by 2031
The original plan called for 10 river ships. Now, fueled by the extraordinary demand that saw the 2027 inaugural season sell out in just six minutes, Celebrity has committed to building 10 additional vessels, bringing the total fleet to 20 ships by 2031.
The expanded fleet lineup includes:
- 2027: Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker (Rhine and Danube)
- 2028: Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer, and Celebrity Boundless
- 2029–2031: Five additional ships to be named
Royal Caribbean Group leadership has also hinted that the river fleet will eventually expand beyond Europe, with rivers around the world on the long-term roadmap.
2028 Season Opens with 80% More Destinations
Alongside the fleet expansion, Celebrity opened bookings for the 2028 river cruise season, which features an 80 percent increase in European destinations compared to 2027. The 2028 deployment adds Dutch and Belgian Waterways to the Danube and Rhine itineraries, including tulip season sailings and expanded Christmas market cruises.
New 2028 highlights include 24 new ports, an overnight land stay in Bucharest on Lower Danube itineraries, and sailings through the Netherlands and Belgium during peak spring bloom visiting Keukenhof Gardens, the windmills of Kinderdijk, and charming Maastricht.
